Celestial Bodies
Performance and film launch for NOWNESS.
In this immersive performance film by British artist Millie Brown, the human body becomes a celestial vessel, absorbing, interpreting, and echoing the unseen forces that shape the universe. Shot in Los Angeles and interwoven with archival planetary sound data from NASA, Celestial Bodies presents an exploration of cosmic interconnectedness through visceral abstraction. The work translates astronomical sonification into movement and pigment, bridging astrophysics and embodied ritual in a sensory portrait of planetary magnetism.
Brown’s body, transformed into both canvas and conduit, enacts a physical dialogue with the vibrational frequencies emitted by planets sounds typically beyond the range of human perception. These translated sonic fields form the invisible architecture of the piece, guiding Brown’s performative gestures as she moves in sync with the atmospheric pulse of the solar system. Paint flows across skin like planetary rings, each stroke a response to the gravitational choreography of celestial bodies.
“The performance symbolizes the power of existing as a minuscule, yet integral, part of something immense, happening beyond our comprehension of time and space,” Brown explains. “Our biological and emotional states are in constant flux with natural forces we rarely acknowledge, this piece is an offering to that hidden exchange.”
